What Are Legendary Pokémon?

Legendary Pokémon are among the rarest and most powerful Pokémon in each game — unique creatures tied to the game's central lore and story. Unlike regular Pokémon, most legendaries are one-per-save encounter, meaning you only get one chance to catch them unless you soft-reset.

Mythical Pokémon take this a step further — they were historically only available through limited-time Nintendo events, making them even rarer than standard legendaries. Today, many Mythicals can be transferred through Pokémon HOME from previous distributions.

Both categories are highly sought-after for competitive teams, Pokémon HOME collections, and shiny hunting — a shiny legendary is one of the rarest Pokémon experiences in the entire series.

Legendary Pokémon FAQs

What's the difference between Legendary and Mythical Pokémon?
Legendary Pokémon are rare but catchable in-game through specific story or post-game encounters. Mythical Pokémon (Mew, Darkrai, Shaymin, etc.) were historically only obtainable through limited-time official events — though today many can be obtained through Pokémon HOME distributions or special in-game events.
Can legendary Pokémon be traded in Pokémon HOME?
Yes — most legendary Pokémon can be stored and traded through Pokémon HOME. All legendaries from The Pokestar are 100% HOME compatible. Some Mythicals are restricted from GTS Wonder Trade but can still be deposited and transferred via Room Trade with specific users.
How do you get legendary Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet?
The box legendaries (Koraidon/Miraidon) are obtained through the main story. The Ruinous Quartet (Ting-Lu, Chien-Pao, Wo-Chien, Chi-Yu) each require finding their shrine and removing all the stakes sealing them. DLC legendaries (Ogerpon, Terapagos) are unlocked through the Teal Mask and Indigo Disk storylines.
Can you get shiny legendary Pokémon?
Yes — most legendary Pokémon can be shiny. In BDSP and older games, legendary encounters are soft-resettable for shinies. In Sword & Shield, Dynamax Adventures give elevated shiny legendary odds (~1/100 with Shiny Charm). Shiny legendaries are among the rarest and most valuable Pokémon collectibles. The Pokestar carries shiny legendaries across all supported games.
Are legendary Pokémon from The Pokestar legit?
Yes. Every legendary Pokémon sold by The Pokestar is legitimately caught by our trainer team — no save editors, no cloning devices. They pass all in-game legitimacy checks, are safe for Pokémon HOME, and are valid for online play in Ranked battles where the species is allowed.
